But first... a quick update:
While we wish this read “Welcome! Come have a drink with us”; instead, it reads something like “construction is a demon” and “please buy wine from us”!
We received our license to sell beer and wine to all you lovely people. Unfortunately, we have not been given approval for having anyone inside our charming little wine bar. For now, we are thrilled to start selling you wine and beer to enjoy in your homes, on your picnics and everywhere in between.
We have a small online shop curated and we also offer customized pairings. Just email us at hanley@respitebottleshop.com and we’ll get your beer and wine needs sorted.
Out of eternal gratitude for your support, we are also offering free delivery for this short period. Nothing fancy, it’ll be Madisyn or I dropping your orders off. And yes, we still need to check ID.
Now... onto our favorite five wines of the week. We have these in stock and ready for you to take home. This sunny weather has us craving higher acid, fruity and refreshing wines that pair with lighter foods like salads, charcuterie, etc.
Love what you see, purchase here.
Sparkling Montuni, Pinot Blanc, Trebbiano, Il Folicello - $22
A gentle, fresh sparkler from an organic farm in Emilia-Romagna is the perfect way to kick off spring. This wine leads with sweet aromas of freshly mown hay, and finishes with a dry, herbal citrus. It is unfiltered, so some cloudiness is expected. Would pair perfectly with risotto and lightly grilled asparagus.
What to know: organic, wild fermentation, no filter, no fining
Fun facts:
· Il Folicello has been farming organically since 1980!
· It’s a family affair! Husband and wife, Antonella & Marco, are now joined by their daughters, Federica and Irene. They all live on the farm – a story we often hear from farmer’s whose practices we love. If you live with the soil, you automatically treat it right!
Rosé of Trepat, Succés Vinicola ‘Patxanga’ - $24
Look, can we usher in Summer faster by drinking this rosé? I don’t know. But, sitting in a beam of sunlight as I type this, I’d like to try! Mariona and Albert’s vineyard, nestled in the hills of Conca de Barberà, is a wild place meant for wild wines. This is a fresh rosé on the wild side – all natural, but clean, with light effervescence. It is reminiscent of Txakoli or Vinho Verdes.
What to to know: Organic, wild fermentation, lightly effervescent.
Fun facts:
· Husband and wife team, Mariona and Albert, do all the work together. Initially, their neighbors thought they were crazy for their organic practices. But now we know, they were right all along.
· Trepat is indigenous to north-eastern Spain and is most commonly found in sparkling rosé Cavas. Here, it shines on it’s own!
Grüner Veltliner, Früg - $22
This is a new project from Jenny & Francois, wines that are “kind to nature and your budget”. This Grüner is a liter of pure joy – medium body, with plenty of stone fruit, apples and a hint of fresh cut herbs. This is a wine to always have on hand, perfect to enjoy while cooking and with dinner once the cooking is done.
What to know: organic, wild fermentation, no filter, no fining
Fun facts:
· I have (yes, have!) a stuffed frog named Froogie and if he could drink… he’d choose Früg every time.
· The name Früg comes from a 1960s dance, a vibrant, shake-your-hips dance. Much like the dance I did after my first sip of this wine.
Noble Chenin Blanc, LTD+ - $40
We had the pleasure of meeting with MW Bree Stock recently and tasting through her Limited Addition line-up. While we’re obsessed with Oregon Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, neither are found here. Instead, we have lesser known varieties like Trousseau and Mencia and, of course, Chenin Blanc. This wine has base notes of honey and almonds, while remaining bone dry – lifted by generous acidity of green apples and quince. Incredibly layered and complex. Ready to drink now, but will also continue to develop if you’re looking to save it for a special occasion.
What to know: sustainable, low intervention, thoughtful farming + winemaking
Fun facts:
· Botrytis is a type of fungus we like called Noble Rot. (When we don’t like it, we call it grey rot). It requires very specific conditions – misty, cool mornings followed by dry, hot days. It’s often used in sweet winemaking, but here is used to make a rich, dry wine.
· Chenin Blanc has been planted in Oregon since the 70s; though, without much commercial success. Bree believes there is great potential for the grape in the Willamette – similar maritime influence with foggy mornings and warm, dry days.
Red
Cabernet Franc, Clos Maurice ‘Volage’ - $25
This cabernet franc is meant to be shared – fresh, fruity, and fun. The winemaker describes it as the “missing link” of any evening. I taste dark plums fresh from the tree, a hint of cranberry. Light on the palate … this wine would be great with roast duck or mushroom pâté.
What to know: Biodynamic, organic, wild fermentation, minimal filtration
Fun Facts:
· Domaine les Clos Maurice is a 21 hectare estate that has been around since 1783 and has a historic commitment to healthy farming.
· Saumur-Champigny is a small region in the Loire Valley predominantly planted with Cabernet Franc.
